  • Western Australia (WA) recorded the highest wage growth in the country, with a 5.6% year-on-year surge in July, surpassing the national average of 4.6%.

  • The mining, construction and trade sectors are driving WA’s wage and employment gains, fuelled by strong demand and ongoing projects.

  • Median hourly wage in WA reached $44.47, while total employment jumped 6.9% over the year; average hours worked also increased by 1%.

  • Queensland followed with 5.2% wage growth, but most other states remained around the national average, with wage increases now beginning to plateau nationwide.

  • Nationally, construction and trades led wage sector gains, up 6.8% year-on-year.

  • For WA small businesses, higher wages offer help in attracting skilled talent but also bring increased labour costs and pressure on operating budgets.

  • The WA wage boom reflects renewed economic confidence, though employers must still manage rising costs and slower growth in other regions.
