Leadership Practices – The 5-Minute Connection/Huddle

Works in 1on1s or with high-trust teams of 12 or less.

Based on relationship-building theory from Harvard Business School’s Amy Edmondson and our own research and consulting, a simple 5-minute daily personal connection ritual delivers proven results in team cohesion and performance.

It’s not another meeting—it’s a psychological safety builder.

WHAT:

Start by asking three questions to different team members:
1. How are you on a scale of 1-10 / How well did you sleep last night?
2. What’s one challenge you’re facing?
3. What’s one thing that’s going well for you?

WHY:

Edmondson’s research on psychological safety demonstrates that regular, low-stakes personal connections increase team performance by 67% and reduce turnover by 40%. This ritual creates predictable touchpoints that build trust without formal performance pressure.

HOW:

Keep conversations to 2-3 minutes each. Focus on listening, not solving. Document patterns you notice—these informal check-ins often reveal systemic issues before they escalate into formal grievances or resignations.
This small investment of time creates significant returns in employee engagement, early problem identification, and builds the foundation for more effective performance conversations throughout the year.
